We've been having a tough time at my house. The thought of Brett Favre in a Jets jersey . . . Well, it's just too much. Whenever anyone mentions the name Farve these days we put our fingers in our ears and sing, "I can't hear you. Na, na, na, na, na."

I am just back from the National Romance Writers of America conference in San Francisco. Usually I have a ton of photos. This year I dragged my camera all the way there and back and never remembered to take it out of my suitcase. Not one photo! Luckily I have friends with a brain and they sent me a few. Here's one of me at the great literacy book signing where RWA took in over $57,000 to donate to literacy.

This one is of me and my Wisconsin RWA friends at the always fantastic Harlequin Party, which this year was held at the Four Seasons Hotel. (in the front—Pam Ford, from left-brand new Harlequin Superromance author-Mary Biebel, Laura Iding, Jude Higgs (Judith Lyons), me and Ann Voss Peterson.)

And the final one of me at the St. Martin's signing where we gave away advanced reading copies of my upcoming urban fantasy debut ANY GIVEN DOOMSDAY. I'm pictured with aspiring writer, Ciara.

When I got home I managed to take a photo of the gorgeous flowers that had erupted in my absence. I was shocked. I'm such a bad gardener. I bought these flowers years ago on a trip to Green Bay, stuck them in the ground when I got home and forgot about them. Every year they got knocked over long before they blossomed because my dog is obsessed with squirrels and cannot resist jumping five feet off the ground trying to catch them as they tease him from the lowest branches. When he lands, he lands on the flowers. But this year my dog has suddenly become a stand in for Marmaduke. (Being 63 in dog years does that, I guess.) There's a lot less jumping and the flowers live!

Remember I'll be at Dragoncon in Atlanta over Labor Day weekend. If you're there, stop by and say hi. I'll be doing 3 panels as follows:

Title: Gimme Danger!
Description: Get a glimpse into how authors bring elements of mystery, suspense, and action into their tales of romance!
Time: Sat 11:30 am

Title: Love Bites, Love Bleeds
Description: A discussion about using vampires, werewolves, and demons as characters in romantic fiction.
Time: Sun 02:30 pm

Title: Keeping Romance Romantic
Description: Paranormal romance, romantic suspense, science fiction romance - romance novels come in all styles for all kinds of readers. But the key here is "romance," and this panel will explore the way writers keep the genre true to itself.
Time: Mon 11:30 am

Autograph and reading times to follow. Check my website for updates.

This month's recommended read is Homecoming by Jill Marie Landis. This book is a Steeple Hill Inspirational romance about a girl who is stolen by the Comanche and then recaptured long after she's forgotten everything about her former life. She's taken in by a family who lost almost everything to a similar Comanche raid. It's a beautiful story of forgiveness and love. I picked it up because I will always remember Jill Marie Landis's book Sunflower, which was an absolutely brilliant western/Indian romance. If you've never read Sunflower you should. It's a classic.

We had a family wedding recently. My flower girl got married! Boy that made me feel old. I went and pulled out my own wedding photos. Here's one of us from twenty-two years ago and one from that weekend. It was very cool to be there.

Every month on my website I run a contest. Answer a question and you're entered to win various prizes (books). Last month the question was "What's your favorite book?" The hands down top vote getter was Gone With the Wind, with To Kill a Mockingbird a close second. I found this interesting. Both are great books that had movies made from them that were just as good (a rarity). They were also one hit wonders of authors who never wrote another book. Of course if I'd written either one, I might have stopped there too. Once you've written a classic what else is there?

I'm getting ready to go to the national conference for Romance Writers of America. Every year in July 2000 writers converge on a different American city. This year San Francisco gets lucky. I haven't been there since I was 12 so I'm looking forward to visiting. There will be a huge book signing on July 30. You can find details at www.rwanational.org.

I will also be at Dragoncon in Atlanta over Labor Day weekend. This is a huge fantasy convention and I hear it is a hoot with attendees dressing up as all sorts of characters. I'm looking forward to it as I've never been to a fantasy convention.

This month's recommended read is Vampyres of Hollywood by Adrienne Barbeau and Michael Scott. I was asked by my publisher to read this book and give a quote for the cover if I enjoyed it. Boy did I! This was the most original vampire novel I've read in years. You might remember Adrienne Barbeau from Escape from New York, one of my favorite movies, or from the television show Maude. Her perspective on behind the scenes Hollywood and the world of horror films makes this book unique and gives it a realistic flavor that compliments the fantasy of a vampire who is a Hollywood B-movie producer and horror film actress. With a hero who is a hard boiled detective, the book also recalls the hard-boiled PI novels of years past. Just fantastic!

Yes, we are under water. If you've been watching the flooding in the Midwest on the news you might have seen my town. Nothing as dramatic as the Lake Delton draining and the houses collapsing, but my little village has been closed off from the world all week. Our Main Street is flooded, some people are using canoes to get to their homes. Here are some photos where the water in the Milwaukee River rose higher than the dam.

My kids are out of school—actually one's been out since mid-May, college you know—so I've begun my summer writing schedule, which means I get into my office around 5:30 a.m. and get as much writing done as I can before everyone's awake. I may luck out this summer since they're both old enough to work and need to. That pesky money thing!

My summer will be spent watching baseball—the Brewers!—and softball—both my husband and my oldest son have a team. This year I also plan to hit the local festivals. There are a lot in southern Wisconsin. Last weekend my husband and I attended Port Pirate Festival, which was a riot until a huge thunderstorm complete with 60 mph winds and the threat of a tornado showed up. (Which led to the flooding mentioned above.)

People were really into the costumes. Lots of buxom wenches and Johnny Depp clones. And speaking of Johnny, he's been making a John Dillinger movie in Wisconsin. Johnny sightings are rampant. Unfortunately I haven't seen him.

Milwaukee is the City of Festivals. Beginning this weekend there is a festival every weekend on the lakefront until September. The biggest festival is Summerfest, which is a huge music (and beer) fest. Then there are festivals for most of the ethnic groups that settled here. My favorites are Festa Italiana (even though I'm not Italian, my husband is) and Indian Summer. If you ever come to Milwaukee in the summer, make sure you hit Festival Park.

The ARC (advance reading copy) of ANY GIVEN DOOMSDAY was the featured giveaway at BEA (Book Expo America) in Los Angeles last month. This is a huge convention for booksellers. I've only gone to it once, when it was in Chicago, but it was amazing to see all the booths of the publishers, the poster-sized covers and the authors who come to sign books. People like President Clinton and Jon Stewart, or Stephen King and Stephanie Meyer. For a reader, BEA is like a rock star convention.

I have written a young adult urban fantasy proposal. At present it is being considered for publication at several publishing houses. Hopefully by next month, I'll have news on that as well as any other upcoming books.

This month's recommended read is The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen. I love this writer! I also recommended her first single title Garden Spells. These books are women's fiction with a twist--just a little bit of the paranormal, combined with quirky characters and an amusing small town. Josey Cirrini is sure of three things: winter in her North Carolina hometown is her favorite season, she's a sorry excuse for a Southern belle, and sweets are best eaten in the privacy of her hidden closet. Josey has settled into an uneventful life in her mother's house, her one consolation is the stockpile of sugary treats and paperback romances she escapes to each night . . . Until she finds it harboring none other than local waitress Della Lee Baker, a tough-talking, tenderhearted woman who is one part nemesis—and two parts fairy godmother.

Me & Mom with the rhododendron.

Spring is here! I can’t believe it. I love flowers, but I’m not much of a gardener. I solve this problem with flowering bushes. Here’s a photo of me and my mom next to my pride and joy—a rhododendron bush.

One of the best parts of spring is baseball. I’m a huge fan. For Mother’s Day my boys took me to a Brewer’s game. We had a table in a restaurant overlooking left field. And we won! My son’s—and my—favorite player, Ryan Braun, hit two homeruns. It was all good. Here’s a photo of our table at the ballpark.

If you like books with baseball, check out my novella, "Mommy for Rent", in Mothers of the Year from Harlequin Superromance.Cover: Any Given Doomsday by Lori Handeland

Foreign sales continue for the Nightcreature Novels. Rising Moon and Hidden Moon were sold to Brazil. I got a kick out of this since I took Portuguese in college. I have no idea why. Blue Moon has also sold to Japan.

The cover for ANY GIVEN DOOMSDAY is done and it is gorgeous. I cannot wait to see this book on the shelves.

I also learned that the second book in the series, DOOMSDAY CAN WAIT, will be released in May of 2009.

Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth PhillipsThis month’s recommended read is Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I’ve been a huge SEP fan from the beginning. I love her humor and her characters, which are always slightly off beat, but also very real. Many of her books have hero’s who are professional athletes, a lot of football players, a professional golfer. In Natural Born Charmer the hero, Dean Robillard, is the quarterback of the Chicago Stars, a fictional pro team. But SEP adds an interesting twist in making his estranged father a rock star and his mother a former groupie. The hero meets the heroine, Blue, when she’d dressed in a beaver suit. It’s hard to explain. You should really read the book.
